Graduate medical education (GME) programs are vital to ensure the Navy maintains a continuous supply of specialists to provide the highest level of care for all beneficiaries and to offer the opportunity for advanced training for all Navy medical officers.
- Approximately 867 training positions for interns, residents, and fellows are available in Navy facilities. These include eight GME teaching sites (three multidisciplinary medical centers, four family practice teaching hospitals, and the Naval Operational Medical Institute).
- A full range of specialties and subspecialties are available at our facilities through full-time inservice training (FTIS). There are also a limited number of GME positions available through full-time outservice training (FTOS), training in other Federal institutions (OFI), and through deferments for civilian training (NADDS).
Joint Service Graduate Medical Education Selection Board
Annually, the Joint Service Graduate Medical Education Selection Board (JSGMESB) selects over 250 GMOs for FTIS residency programs. Because of the superb quality of the Navy's GMO pool, they are the preferred source of input for graduate medical education at the residency level. Incumbent interns are selected for GME training only if the number of qualified applicants from the fleet is not sufficient.
- The deadline for receipt of residency and fellowship applications is normally mid-September. Check the GME webpage for details at http://www-nshs.med.navy.mil/gme/mcpp.htm .
- The JSGMESB is held each year the week after Thanksgiving and the results are released by message and available on an Naval School of Health Sciences (NSHS) Bethesda website within 10 working days of the board.
- By early January, selectees must reply to NSHS Bethesda to indicate their acceptance or declination of training.
Each June, all ships and stations having medical department personnel receive a copy of the BUMEDNOTE 1524, which includes the application procedures, official application, Navy Medical Department residency and fellowship training positions available, and anticipated subspecialty requirements for FTOS, OFI, and NADDS programs. The BUMEDNOTE is available on the website http://www-nshs.med.navy.mil/gme/mcpp.htm and a copy may also be requested by writing to the following address.

The annual issue of the GME Catalog is devoted entirely to providing current information about the Navy's GME training programs. For more specific information about each specialty, applicants are strongly encouraged to contact the program directors or specialty leaders. GMOs applying for Navy GME are required to make some sort of personal contact with the programs to which they apply. The names and e-mail or telephone numbers are available on the website indicated below or by calling (301) 319-4514. GMO’s are advised to begin planning for GME early so that sufficient information can be obtained and interviews can be scheduled before deployments.
