General Medical Officer (GMO) Manual: Administrative Section

Transfer to the Regular Navy (formerly Augmentation)

Department of the Navy
Bureau of Medicine and Surgery

Background

The purpose of SECNAVINST 1210.5 is to establish the intent and policy for the transfer and redesignation of officers in the Navy. The instruction is used to transfer officers between the active duty list and Naval Reserves. Transfer and redesignation is used to assist the Navy in attaining the objective of an all Regular career force. Redesignation also allows the Navy to sustain the authorized strength on the active duty list, manage authorized Regular officer strength, and finally manage the authorized strength in the Training and Administration of Reserves (TAR) Program.

Transfer to the Regular Navy provides officers a number of advantages. The most tangible of these is job stability or security. Except for junior officers who twice fail selection for promotion, Regular Navy officers are assured the option of remaining on active duty for an extended career.
