This video demonstrates how to perform a breast examination.

The free, short version was produced by the US Navy as training for medical personnel in isolated settings. It was included on the Operational Obstetrics & Gynecology CD. It may be freely downloaded.

"Remember that breast tissue extends into the axilla."

"The patient's breasts can be examined while the patient is sitting or reclining. Sometimes it is advantageous to do both."

"Have the patient raise and lower her arms while you watch the breasts. Watch for masses, dimpling, retraction, or any other skin changes."

"Have the patient flex the pectoralis major muscle by squeezing her hips."

"Continue to watch for skin changes."

"Check the supraclavicular area for palpable lymph nodes."

"Then examine the axilla for lymph nodes or any other masses..."
