The free, short version was produced by the US Navy as training for medical personnel in isolated settings. It was included on the Operational Obstetrics & Gynecology CD. It may be freely downloaded.

The longer version was produced by the Brookside Associates for civilian training. It is 5-minutes and is available for download. The same video but in high-resolution is available on CD or DVD.

Pelvic Exam

"Position the patient at the very edge of the exam table."

"Appropriate draping preserves patient dignity."

"Stirrups should be padded for comfort."

"Oven mitts, thick socks, or small battle dressings can be used effectively."

"Start with a close inspection of the vulva."

"Look for visible lesions, masses or discharge."

"Lubricate the vaginal speculum with warm water."

"Using any other lubricant, such as KY Jelly, will interfere with reading the Pap smear."

"Separate the labia and insert the speculum."

"Keep the labia separated to prevent pinching."

"Wait until the speculum is completely inserted before opening the blades."

"Then lock the blades in place."

"Inspect the vaginal walls and cervix."

"A Pap smear can be obtained."

"Remove the speculum slowly, taking care that the blades do not pinch the skin."
